Working And Safety Tips Of Band Saw Machines

Band saw are power tools that are used in many woodworking or metalworking industries. They have metal blades that are in continuous motion, and rides on two wheels that are rotating at the same plane. These metal blades run in a uniform motion to evenly distribute the cutting action. They can be used to straight, curved and even irregular shape which depends on the metal band or blade of the machine. Because of the metallic components, adequate precautions must be taken to safeguard the operators working on the machine. But before safety tips, it is necessary to understand the working principle of Band saw.

Working
The working of a Band saw is very simple. Work pieces or materials are fed into the band saw near the cutting edge. The Band saw system works with the blades moving in a continuous motion which cuts across the material. Each tooth of the band saw is precisely made, thus ensuring good accuracy and eliminating any extra effort to work on the material for making accurate cuts. The band saw has an automatic mechanism, as it detects the material, it starts automatically and cuts the material, and the switches off by itself.

To maintain a higher performance rate, it is important to maintain the machine blades. Coolant should be regularly poured on the blade, as it prevents the blade from heating or from encrustation, thus providing better accuracy.
Special Purpose Band saw Machine Manufacturers provide specially customized machines that can cut different materials in a variety of shapes and provides high performance while requiring low maintenance.

Safety Tips
Band saws though are a great industrial product and provides great service by cutting materials for further manufacturing or any other process. But it has metal blades, so precautions must be taken during any cutting process.

  • Operators need to follow that 3” rule associated with blades. Whenever working with blades, hands or fingers must be at a distance of 3”. While cutting, never back of suddenly and wait till the process is finished.
  • The material should be thoroughly analyzed before being fed into the blade for cutting. If there are small pieces on the material, they should be cleared so they don’t come in between during the process.
  • Also check that the material is flat on the bottom as irregular plane can affect the cutting accuracy.
  • Safety mask or glasses should be worn to protect the face from flying shrapnel or pieces, if any.
